TCU Minimum Entry Points 2026/2027 begin at 4.0 points for most non-health bachelor’s programmes, but a four-point total does not make every course available to you. For candidates who completed A-Level from 2016 onwards, TCU generally requires two principal passes at E grade or above, totalling at least four points in subjects that define admission to the chosen programme.
Health and allied-science degrees follow separate harmonised requirements. Many require three named science subjects, at least six points and specific minimum grades in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or an approved alternative subject.
The decisive words are relevant subjects. A student may have seven or eight total points and still be ineligible for a course that requires Advanced Mathematics or Chemistry. Another student with four points may qualify to apply for several programmes because the grades were earned in the required subjects and all supporting conditions are met.
This guide explains how to calculate points, interpret subject rules and identify course families worth checking. It is based on the official TCU 2026/2027 guidebook for holders of secondary-school qualifications, the TCU undergraduate guidebooks page and the 2026/2027 admissions almanac, checked on 10 August 2026.
| Question | Verified answer |
|---|---|
| General minimum for most non-health degrees | Two relevant principal passes totalling at least 4.0 points |
| Current point scale | A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5 |
| Is S a principal pass? | No; S is a subsidiary pass |
| Common minimum for health degrees | Three specified subjects and at least 6 points, with programme-specific grade floors |
| Does 4.0 guarantee admission? | No; it establishes general eligibility for programmes whose full conditions you meet |
| Do all universities use identical course rules? | No; applicants must read the exact programme row for the institution and campus |
| Can O-Level grades affect eligibility? | Yes; Mathematics, English or science requirements appear in many programme rows |
| Where should applicants verify a course? | In the current TCU guidebook and the intended institution’s official admissions portal |
For the full direct-entry process and official deadlines, use Iziraa’s TCU University Admission 2026/2027 Form Six guide. This article concentrates on the points-and-subject decision that comes before application.
Apply this six-part check to every programme:
POINTS prevents two expensive errors: applying because a course sounds related to your combination, and applying because an online calculator says your total is high enough. Neither proves eligibility.
For candidates who completed A-Level from 2016 onwards, TCU uses this scale:
| ACSEE grade | Admission points | Status |
| A | 5 | Principal pass |
| B | 4 | Principal pass |
| C | 3 | Principal pass |
| D | 2 | Principal pass |
| E | 1 | Principal pass |
| S | 0.5 | Subsidiary pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
The general minimum is not simply “two passes”. The two principal passes used for the intended non-health course must reach at least 4.0 points. For example:
An S grade may satisfy a supporting subsidiary condition where a programme explicitly permits it, but it is not one of the two principal passes required for general direct entry.
Suppose an applicant has Economics C, Geography D and History E. The overall value is six points, but programme matching still occurs subject by subject.
Therefore, do not ask only, “How many points do I have?” Ask, “How many qualifying points do I have for this exact programme?”
TCU lists separate rules for candidates who completed A-Level before 2014, in 2014–2015, and from 2016 onwards. The current A=5 to E=1 scale applies to the last group. Candidates holding older results must follow the category shown in the official guidebook instead of converting their grades as though they sat ACSEE in 2026.
Four points meet the general floor for many non-health programmes when they come from the required subjects. Examples across the current guidebook include programmes in education, business, accounting, records management, community development, social sciences, agriculture, information technology and some engineering or science fields.
However, “4.0” in the minimum-points column is never permission to ignore the admission-requirements column. Consider these verified examples:
This means a four-point applicant should search by subject eligibility first, then compare course titles. The broader University Admission Tanzania 2026/2027 guide explains the relationship between minimum entry, approved programmes and institutional applications.
The table below identifies course families commonly associated with popular combinations. It is a search map, not a universal eligibility list.
| Combination or strengths | Course families worth checking | Conditions that often decide eligibility |
| PCB | Medicine, pharmacy, nursing, laboratory sciences, biological sciences, veterinary and selected agriculture courses | Six-point health rule, three principal passes and minimum grades in named sciences |
| PCM | Engineering, computer engineering, data science, mathematics, physics, actuarial or technology programmes | Principal Advanced Mathematics and Physics; Chemistry or O-Level science conditions |
| PGM | Engineering, geomatics, planning, environmental science, ICT and selected statistics courses | Whether Geography is accepted; Chemistry or Mathematics supporting grade |
| CBG | Agriculture, forestry, wildlife, environmental science, food science and selected health courses | Compulsory Biology or Chemistry and accepted third subject |
| EGM | Economics, statistics, planning, finance, accounting, business and selected ICT courses | Principal or subsidiary Mathematics; O-Level Basic Mathematics requirement |
| ECA | Accounting, finance, banking, procurement, taxation, economics and management | Exact accepted business subjects and Mathematics condition |
| HGE | Law, public administration, political science, sociology, development studies and education | English, History, Geography or language conditions at A-Level or O-Level |
| HKL/HGL | Languages, journalism, communication, law, social sciences and education | Minimum English grade and approved teaching-subject pairing |
| General Arts | Community development, records, public administration, sociology, social work and selected business courses | Institution-specific subject list and O-Level English or Mathematics |
Subject combinations do not create permanent career boundaries. Some ICT, business and social-science programmes accept both Arts and Science subjects. At the same time, a familiar course name can hide a narrow subject requirement. Always locate the specific programme code.
Applicants exploring possible careers can consult Iziraa’s guide to career opportunities for Tanzanian youth across major study fields, then return to the TCU guidebook to verify eligibility.
Health programmes do not use the general 4.0-point rule by itself. TCU’s harmonised table establishes a minimum of six points and named subject grades for many degrees.
Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Surgery require three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, totalling at least six points. The harmonised rule states at least D in each of the three subjects.
These programmes require three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least six points. The stated minimum-grade pattern includes C in Chemistry, D in Biology and E in Physics.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing requires Chemistry, Biology and either Physics, Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition, with at least six points. The stated minimums include C in Chemistry, D in Biology and E in the permitted third subject.
This course accepts Chemistry, Biology and a permitted third subject such as Physics, Advanced Mathematics, Nutrition, Geography or Agriculture. It still requires at least six points and the programme’s minimum grades.
The central lesson is that six points earned in unrelated subjects do not satisfy health entry. Equally, three relevant principal passes may fail the course if Chemistry or another compulsory subject falls below the stated grade. Read both the harmonised table and the institutional programme row.
Some programmes publish 5.0 points, six points or higher grade conditions. For instance, the current guidebook lists selected UDSM journalism and communication programmes with two C grades or above and five points from three subjects. Health programmes commonly state six points. Institutions may also demand a D or C in a particular subject even when the numerical total is already sufficient.
An applicant with B, E and S has 5.5 overall points. Yet this profile does not satisfy a programme demanding two C grades, because the grade pattern matters. Similarly, C, D and E total six points, but that result cannot enter Medicine unless the grades are in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and each meets the specified floor.
Avoid turning points into informal national “cut-off bands”. TCU publishes minimum institutional points and precise subject requirements programme by programme. Selection then depends on applications received and available capacity.
Many Form Six applicants inspect only the ACSEE column and overlook supporting CSEE requirements. Programme rows may require:
For example, a business or information-technology degree may accept broad A-Level subjects but require at least D in O-Level Mathematics when neither defining principal pass is Advanced Mathematics. An engineering programme may require Advanced Mathematics and Physics at A-Level and also a supporting Chemistry condition.
Use both certificates when checking eligibility. A programme-matching sheet should include separate columns for A-Level subjects, A-Level points and every named O-Level condition.
List each A-Level subject, grade and point value. Mark principal passes separately from an S subsidiary pass. Keep the original result available for verification.
Calculate each two-subject pair. This shows why a student with three principal passes may have different qualifying totals for different courses.
Use the guidebook for holders of secondary-school qualifications. The diploma/equivalent guidebook applies to a different admission pathway.
Search terms such as “Advanced Mathematics and Physics”, “Economics, Accountancy”, “two principal passes in Arts subjects” or the intended degree name can narrow the 371-page guidebook. Do not stop at the first match.
Capture the institution, campus, programme name, code, accepted subjects, minimum points, capacity and duration. Copy any O-Level sentence into your notes.
Mark each requirement as satisfied, not satisfied or unclear. If any compulsory condition is missing, remove that course or ask the institution for written clarification before paying.
An ambitious option is one where you qualify but expect heavy competition. A strong match clearly fits your subjects and grades. A safer option is one where you exceed the published minimum and the programme offers reasonable capacity. None guarantees selection.
Apply through the institution’s official portal. As of 10 August 2026, the scheduled first window ends today; the second window is scheduled for 8–21 September 2026, subject to programmes and spaces then available. Iziraa’s updated list of universities still open for 2026/2027 applications helps applicants identify portal status, but the university’s own portal remains decisive.
Applicants can organise the shortlist using a spreadsheet. Iziraa’s guide on using ChatGPT with Google Sheets offers a practical structure, but applicants should verify every extracted requirement against the original TCU row and avoid sharing passwords or identity documents.
Create a table like this before submitting any application:
| Programme | Institution/campus | Required A-Level subjects | Minimum points | Your relevant points | O-Level condition | Capacity | Decision |
| Course A | Institution 1 | Economics + Geography | 4.0 | 5.0 | Mathematics D | 100 | Eligible if CSEE condition is met |
| Course B | Institution 2 | Physics + Advanced Mathematics | 4.0 | — | Chemistry condition | 70 | Not eligible; subjects missing |
| Course C | Institution 3 | Any two listed Arts subjects | 4.0 | 5.0 | English D | 150 | Verify English grade |
This table separates facts from assumptions. It also makes it easier for a teacher, parent or career adviser to review the shortlist.
Programmes assess the subjects that define entry. A third subject can matter for health degrees or a programme-specific total, but it cannot replace a missing compulsory subject.
S is worth 0.5 and may serve as a supporting pass where permitted. It does not satisfy the requirement for two principal passes.
Meeting the minimum permits consideration. Capacity, competition and the strength of other applicants affect selection. The guide on checking University Selection 2026/2027 Tanzania explains how offers and multiple-admission confirmation work after applications are assessed.
The same institution may offer different programmes or capacities at different campuses. Confirm the campus beside the programme code before payment and submission.
Requirements, programme codes and admission capacities may change. Confirm that the cover says 2026/2027.
A balanced list protects the applicant if the preferred programme fills quickly. Related degrees may lead to several career paths and can be stronger academic matches.
Academic eligibility and student-loan assessment are separate processes. After checking course eligibility, review Iziraa’s HESLB Loan Application 2026/2027 guide and the eligibility-focused guide on who qualifies for a higher education loan. A qualifying course does not automatically guarantee a loan or full allocation.
Before paying an application fee, confirm all ten statements:
If one answer is “no” or “unclear”, pause and verify it. A delayed, accurate choice is better than a fast application for a course that cannot assess your combination.
For applicants who completed A-Level from 2016 onwards, TCU Minimum Entry Points 2026/2027 are generally two principal passes totalling at least 4.0 points for most non-health bachelor’s programmes. The scale is A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and S=0.5. Health and allied-science programmes commonly require three specified subjects, six points and stated grade floors.
Your real course options depend on the intersection of four things: qualifying points, accepted A-Level subjects, supporting O-Level grades and the exact institutional programme rule. Use the POINTS method, build a balanced shortlist and verify every choice in the current guidebook before applying.
Most non-health bachelor’s programmes require at least two relevant principal passes totalling 4.0 points. Individual programmes may require higher points, particular grades or specific subjects.
No, not under the general post-2016 direct-entry rule. Two E grades are principal passes but total only 2 points, below the 4.0-point minimum.
You can consider programmes whose minimum is 4.0 and whose A-Level and O-Level subject conditions you fully satisfy. Options may appear in education, business, social sciences, agriculture, ICT, science or engineering, depending on your subjects.
Yes, S is worth 0.5 point, but it is a subsidiary rather than principal pass. It cannot replace either of the two principal passes required for general direct entry.
The harmonised requirements for many health and allied-science degrees require three specified principal subjects and at least six points, with minimum grades in each named subject.
No. If a programme requires Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or another named subject, high grades in unrelated subjects do not replace it.
No. Minimum entry points establish eligibility to be considered. Selection also depends on complete compliance with the requirements, competition and programme capacity.
Use the official 2026/2027 TCU guidebook for holders of secondary-school qualifications, then verify the programme and application status on the intended institution’s official website.
